Draping Exercises: Works In Progress

During my time at FIT, I came to realize a love of draping. Often times, I found when limiting myself by using a single square piece of fabric with minimal or no cutting during the draping process, to achieve a more unique design or interesting cut. Almost none of the above dresses are finished garments but simply pinned together exercises so please excuse the visible construction efforts. However, it was through this type of free form draping exercise that I discovered a talent for quickly coming up with new design ideas. Most of these dresses were draped in under 15 minutes, and I think they show a certain design aesthetic that came to be known amongst my peers and professors as a "Caitlyn Dress."

Term Garment

One garment based on the Film Noir era in cinema but with a modern sensibility.

This dress is constructed using Chiffon with sequin underlay for demure effect and Silk Charmeuse for the front skirt and lining. It is partially a wrap dress--and while a dress on the one side, separates into top and skirt on the other. The skirt is supported by invisible straps and the sequins are exposed on the bottom portion of the skirt lining. I hope it communicates an understated, yet alluring feeling.

About a month ago, I was offered a full-time freelance position as a design/production assistant at Coach. I'm now in my 6th week of the job and loving all of my new responsibilities. I began by illustrating the idea for Zac Posen back in August, and finalizing the design. In early November, I worked with Camilla, one of Zac's freelancers, in helping to construct the dress. The windows finally went up last week, and the final result is absolutely stunning.

Senior Collection

Beginning with the concept of juxtaposition, I sought to create a collection with a target market of women between the ages of 35-55 (as was the assignment). I wanted a collection that incorporated contrasting, yet complimentary elements. Elements such as masculine and feminine, neutral hues mixed with color, and industrial zipper closures constructed into natural and organic fabrics. I drew inspiration from YSL's Le Smoking, Marlene Dietricht, and Sharon Stone (and her wardrobe)
in Basic Instinct. I also played with the idea of architecture translated through design and construction. Various pleating methods, inset flanges, a stand-away bodice, and cut-outs helped bring that idea into my collection. These shaping methods, which tend to have a very angular and tailored connotation, were applied in ways that still lent a feminine and natural feel to the garments. This brought my collection full-circle, back to the idea of juxtaposition.

As my very first swimwear design, I wanted to create a one-piece that was subtle but still alluring and interesting. I incorporated exaggerated armholes, back and necklines to achieve this.

Below is an example of my forecasting abilities. On the left is a design from Marchesa S/S 2007 collection, and on the right is an illustration from a mood board I created in the Spring of 2006 based on my research while studying abroad in Paris and Italy. Notice the fabric manipulation creating a flower on the dress in my design. The same concept was used a year later by an established designer.
